Faith – GOD’S Rx!

“Ahhh! I have a headache, fever and feel achy all over,” groaned Susan.  Neil went into the bathroom returning with ibuprofen and water. “Here take this,” he said handing it to Susan, “then I’ll get you to the doctor.”

FEELING SICK?
What do we do?

We go to the doctor, of course.  After diagnosing our problem, the doctor prescribes medicine which we take faithfully following his instructions.

WHAT ABOUT FAITH?

Don’t we have faith in the doctor? Even though we don’t yet see the results, we have faith that their instructions and prescribed medicine will heal us.

What about faith that Jesus, our great physician, can heal us? Over and over again in the New Testament we read how Jesus had compassion for the sick and healed them all. Just as we have faith in the doctor, we can have faith in Jesus, even though we don’t yet see the results of our prayers.

For we walk by faith, not by sight,
2 Corinthians 5:7

DOCTORS OR FAITH, WHICH ONE?

Faith and doctors don’t have to work in opposition; they can work hand in hand. Although Jesus can heal us, He can also use doctors and medicines to help us overcome illness. So, I’m not saying we should leave the doctors behind; just be sure to include Jesus.

Doctors are a very valuable tool,
but ultimately Jesus,
our great physician,
is our healer.

GOD’S RX!
Prescription: God’s Word

Like doctors, God wrote us a prescription designed to target any illness. In His Word it says:

My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to My words.

Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;
 for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body,

Proverbs 4:20-22 NIV

In these verses, “health” in the Hebrew1 text means “medicine.” God’s Word is our prescribed medicine.

DOSAGE

The Latin term Rx, meaning “to take”, appears on the label of every prescription bottle. Just as we have “to take” a doctor’s prescription for it to be effective, we have “to take” God’s Word.

How to take it:

If we were to use a label for taking God’s Word, it could be Proverbs 4:20-22. It instructs us “to take” it by paying close attention to what it says, listening to it and meditation on it.

When to take it:

There is no particular time to take God’s medicine. You can’t overdose, so take it as often as you like. In fact, frequency increases the benefits!

Since a doctor often prescribes medicine to be taken at meals, why not take God’s medicine then as well? It makes it easier to remember and can be done along-side any other prescriptions.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS!

God’s medicine has no negative side effects. However, it does come with extra benefits. When taking God’s Word by speaking it out loud, it promotes life and boosts our faith! (Proverbs 18:21. Romans 10:17)

COST?

With God’s medicine, there are no co-pays or out of pocket cost. Our cost is zero because Jesus has already paid the price on the cross,

In fact, it was our diseases He bore,
our pains from which He suffered;
But He was wounded because of our crimes,
crushed because of our sins;
the disciplining that makes us whole fell on Him,
and by His bruises we are healed,

Isaiah 53:4a,5 CJB

Jesus does not always heal us in our timing and in our way, but we can have faith that He loves us and wants us to walk in health.

REFLECTION

Do you need healing? Can you follow God’s Rx?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, as I write Proverbs 4:20-22 and say it aloud, bring life and health to my body. Strengthen my faith to believe that no matter how I feel, Jesus is victorious and will work in His timing and way. Today, I have faith for Jesus to heal (fill in the blank). In Jesus name. Amen.

IN FAITH TAKE GOD’S MEDICINE
