Do you know the history of the phones we all carry?1 Test your knowledge with this quiz!
Most of us have fond childhood memories of making a tin can phone. But did you know they were sold as the first telephone? They were marketed as the “lovers’ telephone” because hygiene was a dating issue back then.
Who was the first to invent the telephone? You decide. On February 14, 1876, both Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell submitted their telephone inventions to the patent office. Even though Gray technically submitted his patent earlier in the day than Bell, Bell was awarded the patent.
There was a briefcase cell phone in 1985. However, it wasn’t the first. The first cell phone developed in 1973 by Motorola was about the size and shape of a brick. It weighed 2.4 lbs. and cost $3,995. After charging it for 10 hours, you could talk for a whopping 30 minutes! And the rest is history!
THINK ABOUT GOD IN CONTRAST TO A SMARTPHONE.
UNLISTED?
The first phone book appeared in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1878. Soon, everyone’s phone number was listed in one. Now with cellphones the phone book is obsolete, and everyone’s phone number is both unlisted and unavailable unless it’s shared with us. If a person shares their number with us, it stays in the phone’s memory until we hit “delete.” God’s number is different. It is never unlisted. We can ignore it, but we can never totally delete it. It is always in our memory bank.
CHARGING?
We’ve come a long way baby! Nowadays, we can talk a lot more than 30 minutes before needing a 10-hour charge. However, if our phones aren’t charged, they die. When that happens what do we do? We lose all our contacts until we find a charging port.
God is a contact we can never lose. Plugging into His power will charge up our spirit, but it isn’t necessary to reach Him. No matter how far we have wandered, God is powered up and available 24/7.
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep,
Psalm 121:2-4
5G NETWORK?
Current 5G networks may give us faster connectivity, but they aren’t available everywhere. How about God? We don’t need to worry about mobile hotspots or limited cell towers. We don’t even need a phone! God hears us wherever we are. With Him there will never be a busy signal, dropped call or waiting in the que. Instead, we have instant connectivity!
Call to Me, and I will answer you,
and show you great and mighty things,
which you do not know,
Jeremiah 33:3
PLAN?
Which cell plan do you have? Does it have unlimited data, text and calling? What does it cost? God’s plan provides us with unlimited data available by unlimited calling to Him. And it’s free! No roaming charges or overages! Jesus has already paid for us to be part of God’s family plan. All we need is a little faith to believe in Him.
For God so loved the world
that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish
but have everlasting life,
John 3:16
INCOMING CALLS?
With all the incoming calls we receive, we rarely ask the question, “Who’s calling please?” Since caller I.D. became available in 1968, we can tell who is calling, at least most of the time. Jesus’ name won’t pop up on caller I.D., but His call comes as a thought or a nudge that draws us to Him. Then it’s our choice whether to answer or not. Because He loves us, Jesus is always calling us. He wants us to connect with Him for all eternity.
The Lord has appeared of old to me,
saying:
“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore, with lovingkindness I have drawn you,”
Jeremiah 31:3
REFLECTION
What plan are you on?
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, as I write John 3:16 and say it aloud, make Your love real to me. Help me to remember that You are always available to answer my calls and want me to be a part of Your family plan. In Jesus name, Amen.
BY FAITH IN JESUS, WE JOIN GOD’S FAMILY PLAN
