Faith – WHAT DO I SAY?

“Hey Johnny, what would you like to do tonight?” After pausing a moment, Susan clapped her hands together, “I got it, maybe-” Johnny interrupted, “Watch a movie?” he said finishing her sentence. “My thoughts exactly!” laughed Susan.

With twinkling eyes and a broad grin Susan said, “I know just what to see!” “Me too!” nodded Johnny. “But go on Susan, say your movie first.” Susan’s eyebrows raised as she leaned towards him, “No, let’s say it together. Ready? On the count of 3.” Holding her fingers up as she counted, “1-2-3!”  Simultaneously they shouted, “My Cousin Vinny!”  then burst into laughter.

HOW DID THEY KNOW?

Were Susan and Johnny superb guessers? Is that how they knew what each other would say?  No. They knew what each other would say because they knew each other well.

Do you know someone like that? Someone whose thoughts you can guess and sentences you can finish? I bet that person is not an acquaintance or a casual friend, are they?   In order to anticipate someone else’s thoughts, we must know them well.

There is someone who knows us that well, even if we don’t know Him: the Lord. He knows everything we are going to say even before we say it.

You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord,
Psalm 139:4 NLT

The Lord knows WHAT?
Everything!

 Lord, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do,
Psalm 139:1-3  NLT

The Lord knows us intimately and He loves us anyway!  No matter where we go, what we do or think, He knows it all. We may have secrets from friends or family, but we can’t hide anything from the Lord.

Are you having a bad day?
Feeling angry?
Disappointed?
Scared?

WHO CAN WE TALK TO?

THE LORD!
YOU DON’T EVEN NEED A PHONE!

WHY SHOULD I TALK?

Since the Lord already knows our thoughts and feelings, why do we need to talk to Him about them? Because He’s a good listener with many generous, loving benefits! Here are a few:

1. DEEPENS OUR RELATIONSHIP

When we express our thoughts and feelings to someone who cares about us, doesn’t it bring us closer together? Because the Lord loves us, He wants that intimate relationship with us.

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness,
Jeremiah 31:3 NIV

2. UNBURDENS US

Don’t we all feel better after we talk to someone about our fears, doubts, anger or depression? It’s like a weight has been lifted from us.

It may seem strange to unburden ourselves to someone we can’t see if we’ve never done it. But I promise that the Lord is there listening. He wants us to tell Him our burdens and then in faith, leave them in His hands.

Casting all your care upon Him,
for He cares for you,
 1 Peter 5:7

3. STRENGTHENS US

When by faith we give the Lord our cares, in turn He gives us strength. Doesn’t that sound like a pretty good deal?

Give all your cares to the Lord and He will give you strength.
He will never let those who are right with Him be shaken,
 Psalm 55:22 NLV

4. GIVES US PEACE

The Lord understands our struggles, (Hebrews 4:15).  He’s not looking to condemn us, but wants to take our cares and give us peace.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you;
not as the world gives do I give to you.
Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid,
 John 14:27

EXPRESSING OUR FEELINGS WILL NOT
change the Lord’s love for us;

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities
nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth,
 nor any other created thing,
shall be able to separate us from the love of God
 which is in Christ Jesus our Lord,
Romans 8:38-39.

It WILL NOT cause the Lord to leave us;

And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you.
He will be with you,
He will not leave you nor forsake you;
do not fear nor be dismayed,
Deuteronomy 31:8

WHAT DO I SAY?

Whatever is on your heart. Pour it all out into His hands.

Then in faith, let’s follow King David’s lead in the Psalm.
Who after pouring out his troubles refocuses on who God is and what He can do.

OUR LORD IS WAITING WITH LOVING, OUTSTRETCHED HANDS
 TO LISTEN AND HELP US –
NO MATTER WHAT WE ARE THINKING.

In the day when I cried out,
You answered me,
And made me bold with strength in my soul,
Psalm 138:3

REFLECTION

Have you told the Lord what you are thinking today?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, as I write Psalm 139:4 and say it aloud, I am reminded to tell You my thoughts and feelings. Please take the cares I release to You and give me strength and peace. In Jesus name. Amen.

IN FAITH, TELL EVERYTHING TO THE LORD
