Sam sat stoically beside his stoney faced lawyers. Occupying the opposite side of the table sat Jeff and his lawyers. Splitting the company with his friend had been difficult. As each side presented their proposals, the lawyers whispered advice into their client’s ears.
Ignoring his lawyer’s advice, Sam leaned aggressively towards Jeff pounding his hand on the table, “The company was my idea so, I should receive 90%!” Jeff’s lawyers quickly whispered advice into his ears. Jeff nodded his assent then gently replied, “Do you really think that’s fair Sam? I did put up 80% of the finances.”
Sam’s lawyers whispered in his ears. “Enough!” shouted Sam. “You are all fired! I will handle this on my own!”
Leaving the negotiations, Jeff looked sorrowfully at his friend Sam. Sam received nothing he had hoped to receive, but Jeff received all he was due.
Whether it’s difficult negotiations,
a new experience or everyday questions,
WHO WHISPERS ADVICE IN OUR EAR?
It’s not always easy for someone to advise us, is it?
Take Sam and Jeff. They were losing more than a business; they were losing a friendship. The emotions tied to their negotiations were something their lawyers could never fully comprehend.
Their lawyers, like those who advise us, can’t see exactly what we see, can’t experience our emotions or always have the same knowledge of those involved.
SO, WHO CAN ADVISE US?
Who sees what we see?
Who knows what we feel?
Who knows those involved?
Who loves us enough to advise what is best for us?
THE PERFECT ADVISOR:
JESUS.
He is our constant companion seeing what we see and knowing what we feel in every situation. Our earthly advisors may not know the people we are dealing with, but Jesus does. In fact, Jesus knows them better than we do! He knows their innermost thoughts and motivations.
Jesus is an advisor with insider knowledge
who can advise us to make
the best decision
in every situation.
Earthly advice is good but heavenly advice is better!
It doesn’t matter if our decisions are big or small. Jesus will advise us. “It’s my first day on the job! What do I wear?” Does that sound trivial? Maybe, but if it’s important to us, it’s important to Him.
Because Jesus loves us,
every detail of our life is important to Him.
Even the number of hairs on our head.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Do not fear therefore;
you are of more value than many sparrows,
Luke 12:7
Do you wonder, “Should I accept this job transfer?” Ask away! The Lord has plans for our future and knows the place that is best for us to be.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,
“Plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future,
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
IT SEEMS THAT JESUS EVEN ASKED FOR ADVICE
Was Jesus asking for advice whenever He went alone to pray? Was He asking for advice when He communicated with our Heavenly Father the night before choosing His apostles? It’s very likely.
Now it came to pass in those days
that He went out to the mountain to pray,
and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day,
He called His disciples to Himself;
and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles,
Luke 6:12-13
IF JESUS ASKED FOR ADVICE, SHOULDN’T WE?
1. Pray for wisdom
If any of you lacks wisdom,
you should ask God,
who gives generously to all without finding fault,
and it will be given to you,
James 1:5 NIV
2. Pray for guidance
When we believe in Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, Jesus will guide us.
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come,
He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority,
but whatever He hears He will speak;
and He will tell you things to come,
John 16:13
3. Get counsel
Don’t’ get trapped by bad advice!
Choose your advisors wisely!
Asking Jesus for advice, doesn’t mean we don’t ask advice from others. There is wisdom in the right counselors. We just need to include Jesus as one of them.
Including several godly, trustworthy counselors to pray with us, should lead to confirmation of the advice the Lord wants to give.
We can have faith that Jesus’ advice will always;
ALIGN WITH THE BIBLE,
BE LOVING
AND GIVE HIM GLORY.*
Without counsel, plans go awry,
But in the multitude of counselors they are established,
Proverbs 15:22
JESUS LOVES US &
WILL ALWAYS GIVE THE ADVICE
THAT IS BEST FOR US.
REFLECTION
Who whispers in your ear?
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, as I write John 16:13 and say it aloud, give me ears to hear You whispering Your advice to me. Guide me to those who will be my godly counselors so I can better walk in Your ways. In Jesus name. Amen.
LET JESUS WHISPER IN YOUR EAR
