Around the 18th century among the lower working-class people of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Tango was born.
This mix of immigrants developed the Tango by fusing the various dance styles and music of their cultures into 5 basic steps. It quickly became popular in South American and is now considered one of the top 10 ballroom dances in the world with many variations. 1 Did you guess all the correct answers?
Now that we know a little about the Tango, let’s mix a little basic tango lesson with our faith.
IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO
The Tango takes two people to move through the dance. It’s a form of communication where the partners maintain a connection closer than in other ballroom dances. Partners must rely on this connection and intuition to synchronize their steps. 1
To move through the dance of life, our relationship with the Lord takes two. Maintaining a close connection with Him ensures we can synchronize our movements with His leading. Rather than intuition, we use discernment to recognize the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God,
Proverbs 2:1-3,5
WHO LEADS?
Did you know that the person who leads the Tango, never steps back? All of his steps move forward leading his partner who follows as he guides them through the dance. Our loving Lord longs to take the lead in our lives so that He can move us forward as He guides us through life.
How do we allow the Lord to lead? Like the Tango requires us to be in tune to our partner by listening to the beat, watching and feeling him gently piloting us in the direction to go, we allow the Lord to lead us in a similar way. We become in tune with the Lord by praying and listening to Him, watching for His answers and responding to the gentle piloting of the Holy Spirit guiding us in the way to go, (John 16:13).
I will instruct you and teach you
in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye,

WALK IT!
The Tango is comprised of a of catlike walk with quick, sharp movements. There are five steps to a rhythm which is slow, slow, quick, quick, slow. Only the partner leading can see when he is going, as they walk these steps. 1
Doesn’t our walk with the Lord feel like that? Sometimes things happen quickly, sometimes results are much slower. When we walk by faith, we may not be able to see where we are going, but like in the Tango, we trust that our partner, the Lord, will lead us in the right direction.
